Google Introduce Policy Change That Allows Users to Delete Personal Information from Online Searches

It is important to remember that successful removal of personal information from Google Search does not guarantee that the information will not appear elsewhere online. If this is the case, Google recommends contacting the host site directly to ask that the content be removed. Following recent amendments to policy, internet users will now be able to request that Google remove their own personal data and information from its search engine. This includes removing personal details such as email addresses, phone numbers, login data and other personally identifiable information.

Google have stated that the policy changes are necessary to remain current and effective in protecting users from potential risks such as identity theft, fraud and stalking.

“As the internet evolves – with information appearing in unexpected places and being utilized in novel ways, our policies and protections must adapt as well.”

Michelle Chang, Global Head of Policy, Google Search

Previously, removal of personal details had focused mainly on fraud related data such as credit card details or banking information. The new changes mean that users can now request that other personally identifying information be taken off Google Search using a form to report the website addresses in question.

“The availability of personal contact information online can be jarring – and it can be used in harmful ways, including for unwanted direct contact or even physical harm. And people have given us feedback that they would like the ability to remove this type of information from Search in some cases.”

Michelle Chang, Global Head of Policy, Google Search

Google stated that they will check to ensure that the information does not appear as part of the public record on the websites of government or official sources. In such cases they won’t make removals.

“Cybersmile welcome these latest changes by Google to protect their users. It is crucial that internet users are able to take the necessary measures to protect their identity, wellbeing and personal safety online.”
