Camila Cabello Announced as April’s Cybersmiler of the Month Award Winner

This is not the first time that Camila has taken the inspiring decision to challenge unrealistic body image standards - back in July last year, Camilla encouraged self-appreciation and highlighted how devastating the impact of body shaming can be on young people. Cybersmile are thrilled to announce Camila Cabello as April’s Cybersmiler of the Month Award Winner for opening up about body image and sharing details of her personal thoughts and experiences. Camila joins a host of inspiring public figures that have been recognized for their good work including Lizzo, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Dwayne Johnson and many more.
Camila decided to share details of her personal experiences with body image and self-esteem after struggling with the pressures of the entertainment business and the intrusive nature of the paparazzi in her personal life. With so much expectation on appearance and ‘looking perfect’ in the public eye, she recently used social media to reflect on the culture surrounding body image that’s impacting young people’s self-esteem and mental health.
“I wanted to talk about this because we see pictures of women and praise them for looking good for looking fit or ‘healthy.’ But what is healthy if you are so fixated on what your body looks like that your mental health suffers and you can’t enjoy your life? Who am I trying to look attractive for and am I even attractive to myself if I can’t let loose and relax and have fun and be playful on a beautiful day at the beach?”
Camila Cabello, Cybersmiler of the Month
With social media increasingly affecting how young people view their own bodies, Camila turned to Instagram to share what goes through her mind when she’s out in public – and how deeply the pictures that are taken of her and people’s reaction to them, also affect her.
“I’ve felt super vulnerable and unprepared – I’ve worn bikinis that were too small and paid no mind to how I looked, then saw pictures online and comments and been so upset…I reminded myself when it impacted my self-esteem, that I was thinking the culture’s thoughts and not my own. A culture who has gotten so used to an image of what a ‘healthy’ woman’s body looks like that is completely not real for a lot of women.”
