Why do people bully each other online?

I'd like to hear different opinions as to why people are cyberbullying each other so much? What's happened to people being kind to each other? It's obvious that there is always going to be nastiness in the world but there is definitely a trend of people being abusive to others for the sake of it and internet trolls who seem to thrive off the sadness of others. Why is the problem growing and what can we do to change it?

Its easy to bully or bite back on the internet without anyone knowing who you are. I think that the anonymity of the web means anyone can use it like a weapon if they want to, with no consequences. I don't really know the answer but I do think some big changes are necessary, we cant let the internet be destroyed by the haters.

It is mostly a behavioural problem with young people which could be addressed through good parenting and school e-education. Adult trolling and stalking etc is a different thing and we need to see more prosecutions for adults who use the internet to ruin peoples lives.

Cyber bullying is must easier than face-to-face bullying, there is generally no consequences for the bullier because more often then not they dont get caught. The internet is also a great tool for individuals looking for people to target as so many people are on the internet right now. But, many people may not know that the people doing the bullying are often crying out for help themselves or even a victim of bullying as well. So, it must be remembered that the bully needs help too and not to isolate them with saying things like "your a horrible person" etc etc etc... Both sides of the story need help!

Very true SAMS, there's no value in bullying the bully! It just creates more negativity and hurt.

I think people are cyberbullying others so much because it's become socially acceptable to 'hate' on other people. If you read comment sections in the media the top rated comments are almost always abusive content for no apparent reason. I haven't given up on the human race completely though because Cybersmile are now here to address the balance!

I couldn't have worded it any better myself Suzanne!

When someone gets angry about something they usually don't show it in public because it can be embarrassing but in computers if you want people can just disappear in the click of a few buttons after you say something to them making less of a drawback do being mean.

Good point Sheepsie. There are probably lots of cyberbullies who would not dare to say nasty things in real life who feel "safe" hiding behind a profile. It seems like anyone can do it and get away with it.

People say it is just human behaviour and there is nothing we can do about it but i disagree. I think everyone has got free will and choice. Showing people how fantastic the internet is and how positivity can change the world is the best way to help people make the right choices in how they use the internet. Keep up the good work Cybersmile!!

Agreed Marti! People have forgotten how nice it feels to make someone else happy! As my Dad used to say "It's nice to be nice"

Sometimes people might bully others because they have a lot going on in their personal lives and feel the need to take it out on someone to make them feel bad just like the bully does themselves. Obviously, there is no excuse for bullying someone, but it really makes you think how much bullies need education about empathy too and to be able to speak to someone about what may be happening.

No rules, no deterrent, no responsibilities, no guidance and seemingly no way to catch the offenders. This is a recipe for disaster when it comes to monitoring people and how they use the internet. Yes it is a basic behavioural problem, bullying has been around for a long time and it seems that societies just accept it. Its time we stopped just shrugging our collective shoulders and actually used the internet for helping people to realise their potential instead of festering in personal hate campaigns and negativity.

If there are no rules then people will make their own up, simple. The internet must remain free from "police" etc but there needs to be some kind of ground rules for helping people to use it responsibly. I really think a lot of cyberbullying is down to kids just not realising that they are destroying real people, themselves and the internet by bullying online.

Very true Jules. The last thing we want is the Internet police telling us what we can and can't do online.

I agree with everything you said, though a lot of the people who cyber bully know exactly what their doing. To give you the short answer they do it because they can. Not even because its a trend but because they can and don't have to care what the person will say back because they don't know who the bully is either way.
