Why do girls get so much abuse on games?

2

My eldest daughter has had to delete her profile and re-join an online game because of the abuse she got for being a girl. Is this common among online games? I am so shocked because she love the game and is really good so I can't understand why she is treated so badly. She is now back but afraid to give any clues to her gender to avoid abuse. Is it just the game she is on? (League of Legends) or is this true for other games as well?

I'm sorry to hear you daughter is having trouble.
Im not an online gamer myself, so i cant comment from experience. However, i know a fair few people who are gamers and regardless of their sex they can get abuse, I am not saying its not an issue but as gaming is considered i think its an across-gender issue and should be looked at by the people who make the games. :) I think the type of abuse males and females get will differ but unfortunately its not uncommon.

Girls get REDICULOUS amounts of abuse when gaming, I think it's because we're better at it! But seriously, Im a gamer and have been told all sorts of things ranging from calling me a whore to wishing me dead - and yes it does hurt. It's not so much what they say that hurts but more what gives them the right to speak to me like that? The thing is, I'm fortunate because I can handle abuse but I have friends who are really affected by it, they don't even play any more which is a real shame because it made up such a large part of their life and all of a sudden it's gone. It's not about saying that they can't handle it so they shouldn't play, it's about that they have the same right as everyone else has to play it without being abused and threatened with rape and murder.

League of Legends is a very toxic community anyway (I play it too). I would suggest she kept her gender to herself if she was getting direct comments, but from experience a lot of comments aren't made specifically because of gender/race/religion, it's just what they think they can pick on because you mucked up in game. That's the LoL community for you.. you can't play badly.. I would say the same rule applies to any game with a poor community to be honest.

There are block functionalities and you can mute players during game. But the sad truth is they're always going to be like that within that specific game.

I also think it depends on the game, I have played shooters and games alike and you don't even see people chat half the time.

I was once playing a shooter and was told that women are for making baby's and not shooting guns....I wonder how this kind of abuse affects teenage girls? I wonder if it has any effect on their career choices?

Ok first of all. This happens anywhere! I had to do this once and I'm very sorry to hear about your daughter. We need to get a message to boys about this because it's mainly them doing it

Being realstic, games like shooters do have 18 age ratings. Obviously there is no real way to battle stopping younger people play these games. Parents need to understand what they're letting their child into by purchasing these games for them.

A lot of nasty comments is just rage, without any real thought or care. This is where the topic of resilience comes back, being able to bounce the comments off again without any care the same they were aimed at that person with no care and more than likely just thrown for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, so to speak.

Hi guys, I've just joined and found a topic very important to me! It's such a shame that there is so much abuse in gaming now, it's ruining it. I think everybody on here has a point in their own way but for me, I just don't like seeing people saying such hurtful things and seeing people hurting like that. I really don't like hearing people upset. This is amazing though, I think this community can really make a big difference as it grows....well done guys.

Yes, we are awesome gamers!

I'm sorry you're going through this kind of online gaming treatment. No one should disrespect anyone. I'd suggest you report this kind of behavior. Place boundaries around you, stand strong by telling them you won't tolerate verbal abuse. Or leave the game. Can you start a group of gamers that are your friends? Maybe "safe gaming rooms"? If you are under 18, is there someone who can help you, a parent? guardian? Maybe this is a great opportunity for you to start a non-profit gaming organization that is specifically against Cyberbullying? Work with an online gaming company? Just an idea.

Best of luck to you. We are all here to support each other :)

P.S. I can't wait for the new Tomb Raider game. It looks amazing.

i meant to say to start an online gaming community safe from cyberbullying not a non-profit organization. Cybersmile.org is already doong that very admirably. Just want to clarify! 😀

Hi Scarlet, good advice : ) Maybe we could ask Cybersmile to facilitate groups of gamers that want to "play nicely"?

That's a great idea GamerGirl and ScarletJedi, we get lots of gamers contacting us that are feeling a bit nervous or anxious about playing games after being abused online. Maybe we can look into this....great work guys thank you!

I do really think it's shame how people feel they can't play games due to abuse. For me I've just always 'muted' players because I can't be bothered to read what's being said, nor do I want to read them in the first place!

Creating a community for nice gamers would be awesome :D

PS. Kitty, I LOVE your style!

Maybe we should start a topic to discuss the possibility of getting Cybersmile to create/facilitate a community of "nice" gamers? If you like the idea maybe you could start the conversation? I will if you'd like me to, entirely up to you. I'd kind of prefer you to because I'm new!

Is this because of abuse when gaming online? If so this is really sad : (
