SXSW cancelation of abuse in gaming discussion

I've just heard that SXSW have cancelled the two discussions scheduled to discuss various forms of abuse and harassment within online gaming. Why have they done this? Surely this just means that the bullies have won and it gives them a bit more strength to continue their misogynistic crusade to ruin the games industry? I really am so disappointed with SXSW Interactive. What do you guys think?

Just read up on this and it looks like a knee-jerk reaction thats not been very well thought out at all. If they were worried about the reaction upon announcing the panels, then they should be worried about the reaction to cancel even more. Seem like they have given in to the haters, not a good message.

I agree with Jules92, this would or should have been considered very closely before making the decision to host the discussion. Once a decision is made it's imperative that they stand by it. Now, they appear to be a bit weak and indecisive if you want my opinion. It was a really important discussion to have and now it won't happen because (if I understand correctly) of a few anonymous threats from online trolls. It seems a bit weak.

I can't believe the organisers have done this. What a bail-out!! They have handed power and control over to a few morons making threats on the internet, just what we all need!! They have done no-one any favours with this back tracking knee jerk capitulation. Weak, very weak.

Odd decision considering how much effort was put into promoting and organising this event, the panels must be furious. Don't they have security at these events?? Makes no sense. Or is it a publicity stunt, gone wrong??? I had not heard of this event until this panel debacle surfaced.

Articles i'm reading are talking about the panels being one "pro Gamergate" and the other "anti Gamergate". Since when did "Gamergate" become the only thing on the internet that raises concerns about abuse???? Misogyny, rape, threats, patriarchal this and that blah blah blah............ Seems like some people are riding "Gamergate" all the way to the bank and in the process deflecting peoples attention away from far more serious issues. This is a joke.

The irony of panels planning to discuss harassment and abuse cancelling due to threats of violence is from another world! The latest though is that they are speaking with law enforcement and considering their options for the event. I've even heard rumours that they are planning entire days on the subject of harassment in gaming now....talk about all or nothing! I'm really interested to see how this pans out. For anybody that doesn't know all the details Cybersmile have got the info in their news story of the cancellation here www.cybersmile.org/news/sxsw-cancel-gaming-abuse-panel-discussion
Interested to know if anybody else has heard any rumours?

Looks like you were right Superdad! News is they are having a "summit" with all the panels involved and are indeed beefing up on security etc. Good move by SXSW as the original decision was the wrong one. I just hope they move away from the "gamergate" agenda, i'm a woman and i'm sick of hearing about it! There is far more that can be achieved in the equality argument by looking at the bigger picture so I hope they don't waste this opportunity to broaden the perspective on this issue. The world is now watching you SXSW!!

Good move by the organisers, but their hand was forced by financial backers of the event. Would they have taken this step if the sponsors hadn't threatened to walk away? Who knows. Still, whatever the reasons, the discussions will now take place with a considerably wider audience due to the media coverage. Let's hope they make the best of it.
