Many people do not understand mental illnesses and find it hard to cope with. Understanding, and being aware of other peoples ignorances is about as much as you can do to keep yourself from taking their behaviour personally. Your parents sound like they are very supportive and pro-active in helping people to understand, which is wonderful. Perhaps there is a support group local to you that could give your family more support or information about how to handle situations where people around you are being insensitive?
