Misogyny in gaming

Fantastic to see Cybersmile and Intel partnering to address the abuse and misogyny that's ruining the gaming experience for us all. Why do you guys think misogyny has become so widespread in gaming in particular?

I don't think the problems stop with misogyny. Racism and homophobia are equally as worrying. The problem is hate, and how it is used to hurt other players when people loose control in game and become toxic players. Women are trying to deal with old perceptions and learned behaviour all over the world, not just in gaming.

Abuse of all sorts is going on in gaming, and misogyny is one that is getting a lot of attention at the moment. I think women become a target for abuse in gaming because so many males are playing online and see women as a threat, and an easy target for sexist abuse. I agree with Petula, misogyny is not the only form of abuse that people have to deal with. It seems that anything about you can be focused on to deliver abuse, your weight, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, race, religion etc etc etc. The real issue is why people choose to attack each other in-game and what can be done about it???

personally I think it's a primal thing. I think that some guys (a few) feel their masculinity is threatened by female gamers that are beating them and that they revert to the most obvious form of defence/attack - misogyny. I'm really proud to see Cybersmile and Intel working together to address this as it is stopping so many young girls fulfilling their true potential. Well done x

We need to stop using terms like 'girl gamers' or 'boy gamers'.....we are all gamers and that's all that matters.

Well said Judge! Its a shame that women are treated like this but I also see how all types of hate talk is affecting gamers so we need to be careful not to just focus on one form of hate abuse when so many other people, male and female are being abused by race, religion, sexual orientation, etc etc etc.

I agree totally. Misogyny is a problem along with all the other types of hate speak that is used when gamers start hurling abuse. They should all be addressed for what they are, hate. If we start to segregate the types of abuse and deal with them separately then we are not going to achieve anything. Hate is hate, pure and simple, the labels we put on it only confuses the problem. I think that only a very small percentage of gamers hurling sexist and misogynistic comments actually hate women, most just hate loosing and are insecure, weak morons.
