Long term damage of cyberbullying

1
Suzanne
I think that episodes of cyberbullying can cause permanent damage in some people such as the young or vulnerable. There is a common complaint of victims feeling persecuted or 'under a microscope' all the time which surely can contribute to long term psychiatric problems. What does everybody else think about this? Does anybody know if there has been any studies done on this subject?

I have not seen anything done on this subject in the way of studies or reports but it makes sense that there is bound to be some long term effects. I would think that some cases would see effects on victims similar to PTSD.

I don't think it would be hard to find a link between cyber bullying and depression, eating disorders and low self esteem in young people. Everything in their lives seems to be played out online and when it goes wrong their whole world seems to collapse.

I remember that feeling of being alone and scared when i got picked on way back when I was 12, on Minecraft. Even today I can still feel the stress of it and although I got over it and sort of toughened up to the abuse I still remember how alone I felt. I didn't want to tell my mum because I thought they would ban me from the game so I tried to deal with it alone. I think a lot of young kids keep it to themselves too much

I tried to google some stats about this and the UK .Gov site doesn't even classify "cyber bullying"! Studies should be done to back up action for the future protection of people online.

It would be great to see Cybersmile do some research with a university or something to look into the long term effects of cyberbullying and digital abuse.

There are small studies about physical bullying but not read anything specifically for cyber bullying. There are links between bullying in general, eating disorders and Borderline Personality Disorder.

Hi. Can relate to that. Spent most of my time at school and online being bullied. As a result I usually dont trust people my own age. So I do stuff on my own.
