I don't know anything about this site and my 13 year old daughter wants to join as all her friends are using it. Has anyone had any experience with TikTok? Should I be worried and how can I keep her safe?
Any advice would be good.
As a parent myself, I would say you need to talk this through with your daughter, she probably knows more about TikTok through her friends than most parents! I apply the same process to my kids every time they join a new group or play a new game - go through the privacy and security stuff from the start, together. This will let your daughter know that you are aware of the risks and that you are looking out for them. It doesn't have to be a boring sit-down lecture, just start chatting with her about TikTok and let the conversation flow. You may be surprised how much you will learn, and how much your daughter enjoys educating you!
I think the more you know about how this site works, the better. Find out what you need to know with your daughter. I think if kids have problems online and feel like they can't turn to their parents, there is a bigger problem. I would try and build the relationship/conversation with your daughter around online activities without being too judgmental about the sites she is using, or what she is using them for. This could be a great opportunity to connect with her and learn more about her life online without being too obtrusive. You will also be able to assess how confident and capable she is handling potential problems.
We get on well so I will take some time out with her to learn a bit more about her life online. I know it is very important to her and I want her to be independent but also make sure she is being safe.
