Gaming Vs Griefing

Some gaming communities are better run than others. I think that really competitive gaming spaces where individuals or teams are pitted against each other are breeding grounds for raging at opponents. For some people it's the best part of the game, swapping insults etc. Trying to manage that is a big problem if the players doing it are saying "whats the problem, we are cool with it". We are ending up with a situation where some gaming spaces are toxic and some are not and you have to choose games, not on the basis of what games you like but on the basis of what community you fell comfortable with. That can't be good for the future of gaming, or is it just the reality of games now?

It doesn't matter what game you are playing if you're female because you automatically get disgusting abuse once they know your sex. We shouldn't have to lie or have gender neutral usernames just so we can enjoy online gaming the same as males. Honestly, the abuse is vile ranging from "what are you doing shooting guns? Women are for making babies" through to rape threats. Competitiveness is no excuse for outright abuse.

Your right, competition is no excuse for abuse and raging but we see it accepted in Sports and we see it displayed as entertainment on TV reality shows as well. The type of abuse can vary depending on what they think is going to get to you, baiting, a sport in itself it seems. Racism, sexist comments and threats are all used just for effect, weaponising all they can to provoke and attack. If "no excuse" was a position the gaming platforms took, do you think that would make a difference? Would they would be able to stop it?

Funny I have had many many many female characters in online games and NEVER experienced any of this then again I NEVER put it about what my actual sex was either... Closest I have had was various tools in WOW hitting on my character which always amused me. I have found the only people who get this kind of abuse are the ones who go out of their way to put it about they are an actual girl.

Some gaming communities seem to be Griefer/bully central seems to be PVP games attract them the most and the GM's in those games are the most pig ignorant about tackling the issue an example would be of POTBS where we told lifes not fair get over it when getting ganked by six other players or we shouldn't of been in that area... Yeah...
