Facebook Moderators suffering from stress?

Just read some reports about out-sourced moderator teams who are suffering from PTSD like symptoms because of the images they are employed to block or take down. I am stunned that humans are doing this because you would need millions of people to do this effectively. Even more stunned that they have not used their incredible resources to engineer AI or smart tech to address this.

Most probably out-sourced to avoid taking on the responsibility of safeguarding the welfare and mental health of people exposed to extreme violent or sexual images all day long. Like you though, it is baffling that they have not come up with a more tech oriented solution that can actually handle the numbers.

Sorry, I meant, like you, I find it baffling, not I find you baffling! :)

LOL! No problem.

Yes, you would have thought Facebook have algorithms that could detect extreme images of violence, sex etc. The numbers just don't add up to me. With millions of users uploading images per minute how can human moderators ever possibly cope?

As far as I understand, FB employ over 25,000 moderators around the world, some are contractors. This is not unusual for a large company, but I agree the numbers are worrying. Even if it is enough to do the job effectively, that number of moderators is a huge group of people that are being exposed to horrific images all day, every day of their working lives. There's got to be another way.
