What is your favorite social media platform and why?
I like them all for different reasons, but probably YouTube! I love that people can share what they are passionate about and have a creative outlet with their videos.
Do you think social media is a blessing or a curse?
I think it can be both. I think the internet can be a great place and connect so many different people, but at the same time, depending on how it’s used, can be really toxic and damaging as well.
Have you ever been personally targeted with cyberbullying or online abuse?
Definitely! Throughout my time on the internet, I’ve experienced quite a few hurtful things said to me. I don’t think everyone who leaves those kinds of comments probably always means harm, but when people go to really far extremes with some of the things they say and do, it can definitely affect you badly.
How did it make you feel? How do you deal with it?
For me, a lot of it has been really hurtful to me and would make me feel like everyone hated me. Seeing people being so positive with me coming back to the internet has been really amazing and I’ve been trying to focus on that!
Are there any particular issues that you are aware of that you would like to see addressed or highlighted?
I think sometimes before people say things to others online or offline, it’s important to think about how you would feel if that was being said to you and how the person could be affected by it. I think unfortunately sometimes when people are behind a screen they forget that what they’re saying to someone is being said to a real person with real feelings. I think if everyone could just show love and be kind to others it would make the internet and the world a much better place.
What advice would you give to someone being cyberbullied or abused online?
I would say to try your best to not let it affect you, which I know can be really hard. Try to focus on the positive people and the things that make you happy, and don’t be afraid to take a step back for yourself if you feel that you need it.
What do you think can or should be done to reduce the amount of abuse online?
I really think people should be aware of how what they say and do to others can affect them and how our words have the power to lift people up or tear them down. I think we should all do our best to treat others kindly online and show others love. The world can be such a dark place sometimes and I just think the world needs more of that.
What would your message be to someone who thinks cyberbullying is just a joke?
I know some people may think that what they are saying is funny or isn’t seriously affecting people, but I think it’s important to remember that it truly can and can have really awful effects on people, and how they feel about themselves. I think it’s important for people to remember how they would feel if they were the ones being cyberbullied and to know it’s never too late to change their ways and to hopefully be more positive towards others and not say really cruel things. I think we should all always strive to be the best people that we can be.
What words of advice would you give to anybody anxious about following their dreams due to negativity online or fear of ridicule?
I think people that have a dream and are passionate about something should always go after it no matter what. I know that can be so difficult when it seems like so many people want to bring you down and judge you so harshly, but remember that for all those people, there are so many others that are really kind, positive people. If you really want to do something, the negative people should definitely not have the power to take what you love away from you.
What does the rest of this year and next year hold for Eugenia? Is there anything exciting that we should be aware of?
I’m so excited to be back online and so grateful for the support! I would love to use my platform to continue doing what I love and enjoy, and to hopefully be able to spread love and positivity to others and bring hope to people who have been through similar situations I have. I know it can be so easy to feel alone in the world, but I really want people to know that they never are no matter what.
In 10 words or less, why is kindness so important?
One act of kindness can change someone’s life.
