Catching Up With Rob Whyte Of Blush Create To Discuss The New Cybersmile Brand Design


Although Cybersmile's demographic is extremely varied, Blush found that each person can relate to and share the same vision which the brand represents - strength, unity and positivity.

Tell us a bit more about Blush and which services you offer?

Like all good ideas – Blush started in the pub! A few beers and blush ciders later and we found our name. Fast forward a few years and we are a successful creative team who work our socks off to get the right results.

We’re a forward-thinking creative design agency based in Manchester, U.K. We work with a diverse range of clients; from ambitious start-ups to international brands, specialising in brand identity, creative direction and digital design and print.

What’s the most memorable design job you’ve worked on?

There are lots of jobs we’ve loved working on. It’s always nice to work alongside a start-up company and see their brand grow.

Of course larger projects are great too. Our integrated marketing campaign for World Heritage Site, Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich was a really fun one to work on and was also double award-nominated.

The advertising campaign included design for billboards, animated escalator posters, black cab designs and an online advertising campaign which featured across websites and social media platforms. During the campaign, ORNC saw over 44,000 additional visitors despite an overall trend of lower visitor numbers in London and Greenwich attractions that year.

Why did you choose to support Cybersmile with pro-bono design work?

Every year we select charitable organisations to work with. We’ve done this since we set up Blush back in 2013. By doing so we are fortunate enough to work with some amazing charities and hear their incredible stories.

Cybersmile was no different, and was an easy decision really. We knew they were good people, doing good things. It’s great to be able to use our design expertise to help raise awareness for such a valuable and respected organisation.

We’re proud to be working alongside Cybersmile to help confront all forms of online abuse and bullying.

What was the brief and how did you set out in achieving it?

Cybersmile were looking to modernise their brand identity – ultimately helping them to broaden their audience and raise further awareness through social platforms.

We set out by soaking up as much of Cybersmile’s culture as we could. From researching their audience, to studying past design material. This gave us a clear direction for generating initial design concepts.

A new, multi-coloured brand device in the form of geometric shapes was created; aiming to capture the charity’s energetic and dynamic personality.

The use of pattern and vibrant colours gives the brand endless configurations to create different shapes and graphics.

The new design is set to be rolled out across Cybersmile’s social media platforms, marketing and print material.


Was it difficult to find something that resonated with everybody regardless of gender, age or demographic?

Although the Cybersmile demographic is extremely varied, we found that each person can relate to and share the same vision which the brand represents; strength, unity and positivity.

Why are professionally designed social media account headers important for brands, celebrities and influencers to consider?

Social media plays an important part in today’s world and a professionally designed header can convey trust and reassurance as well as reinforcing brand awareness.

Do you think social media is a blessing or a curse?

Of course there are good and bad points but if regulated (and used) correctly it can be a great resource to bring people together and promote positive change.

Do you have a positive mantra that you use to motivate yourself?

Less is more (unless it’s cake).

What does Blush have planned for 2018?

This year we’ll be celebrating five years as a design agency. Last year was our most successful to date and we gained three new major clients. Looking forward to seeing what 2018 brings!
